# Item-level dataset - tariffcheck.ca Canada's counter-tariffs on US goods, effective 8 September 2026, mapped to 39 consumer categories at the tariff-item level. Generated from the live site. Free to use, quote or check. Attribution appreciated but not required. Corrections very much wanted: hello@tariffcheck.ca ## WHICH TARIFFS THIS IS ABOUT There are two sets of tariffs running at once and they are easy to confuse. * United States tariffs on CANADIAN goods entering the US. NOT IN THIS DATASET. * Canada's counter-tariffs on US goods entering Canada, effective 8 September 2026. THIS IS THE ONLY MEASURE COVERED HERE. They run in opposite directions and cover different goods. American wine carries no Canadian surtax; Canadian wine going south is tariffed under the other measure. Both are true and they answer different questions. ## SOURCE Department of Finance, "Complete list of U.S. products subject to counter tariffs", on canada.ca. Retrieved 2026-08-27, 648 tariff items, bands 15%, 25%, 50%. Every rate in tariff-claims.csv is read from that file, not from reporting about it. The site's build fails if any rate here stops matching it. Wording for items that are ABSENT comes from the CBSA Customs Tariff schedule for 2026, at cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/trade-commerce/tariff-tarif/2026/01-99/chNN-2026-eng.pdf (substitute the chapter number), because the Finance list carries heading text only for items it includes. ## FILES tariff-claims.csv 204 cited items and 222 claimed absences. claim=listed -> the item is on the official list at 'rate' claim=absent -> nothing on the list starts with that prefix on_official_list is a self-check: any row reading "YES - CLAIM IS WRONG" is an error, and please tell us. origin-claims.csv 98 manufacturing claims, each with its source and the date it was checked. ## HOW TO VERIFY ANY ROW 1. Open the Department of Finance list on canada.ca. 2. Search it for the tariff_item value. A number that returns no hit is not on the list - that is the entire basis of every claim=absent row. 3. For the wording of an absent item, use the CBSA chapter PDF above. ## READING THE CONFIDENCE COLUMN Origin claims are checked by a human and dated, not machine-verified. The confidence column describes HOW GOOD THE SOURCING IS, separately from what is being claimed: verified the manufacturer states it on their own site or press material reported a credible third party states it, OR the manufacturer makes a general claim ("a Canadian manufacturer") without specifics unconfirmed an absence of evidence is being recorded, not evidence Current distribution: {"verified":58,"reported":31,"unconfirmed":9} "verified" means the manufacturer said so publicly. It does not mean anyone inspected a factory. If a company is wrong, or moved a line without updating its site, this dataset is wrong with it. Manufacturing locations change without announcement, which is why every row carries a date. ## KNOWN LIMITS * The list can be amended before 8 September, and remission orders commonly follow. Re-check against the live page before publishing. * Not being on the list is not the same as not getting more expensive. Currency, freight and ordinary supplier behaviour are not in scope here. * Origin is a property of the item, not the brand. A US brand is frequently not a US-origin good. * 4 origin rows carry no source and are marked unverified. They are aggregate context rows, not product-level claims. Generated from the site build.
