Directory › Appliances

Are appliances tariffed in Canada?

Fridges, dishwashers, laundry, ranges, heating and cooling. Each of the 6 entries below is checked item by item against the Department of Finance list of 648 U.S. products subject to Canada's counter-tariffs, in force since September 8, 2026. Rates as of September 10, 2026.

A US brand is not the same thing as a US-origin good. These surtaxes apply to goods by country of origin. They do not apply to companies. An American brand manufacturing in Mexico is not covered; a German or Korean brand manufacturing in Tennessee is.

How to read the labels
Made in Canada
Manufactured in Canada.
Not US-made
Made outside the United States, so outside these tariffs, but not Canadian-made. Still a valid answer, just not the same answer.
Depends on the model
The brand builds the same product in more than one country, including the US. The unit in the box decides.
Origin unconfirmed
Where it is manufactured could not be established.
Confirmed by the maker
The manufacturer states it on their own site or in their own press material.
Reported by a third party
Someone credible says so, or the maker claims it in general terms without specifics.
Not verified
Recorded as an absence of evidence. Shown rather than hidden, because a directory that quietly guesses is worse than one that admits the gap.

Appliances

Fridges and freezers

A US-built fridge or freezer imported after September 8 carries a 25% surtax on top of its normal duty. One line is worth knowing about: display and beverage cabinets with built-in refrigeration sit at 50%, not 25%. A US-built wine fridge or beverage centre is taxed at double the rate of a US-built kitchen fridge.

What people get wrong

Most fridges sold in Canada are already built in Mexico, South Korea or China, and those are unaffected. The US-built lines are the ones to check: GE Appliances builds in Louisville, Kentucky and Whirlpool builds in Amana, Iowa. The sticker on the door, not the badge on the front, decides.

Dishwashers

Buying a dishwasher: nothing. Complete household dishwashers, tariff item 8422.11, are not on the list. Repairing one: dishwasher parts are, at 25%. A US-made replacement door assembly or pump housing gets more expensive while the machine itself does not.

Why it is widely believed otherwise

Appliances were named as a targeted sector, and dishwashers are appliances. The tariff-item list picked up the parts line and left the finished machines off it.

What people get wrong

This is the entry that changed most when the official list was actually read: this site previously said US-built dishwashers were tariffed, on the strength of sector-level reporting. They are not. The origin research below still holds and is still worth reading, because being US-origin and being tariffed turn out to be two different questions.

What people get wrong

There is no Canadian-made household washing machine, and this directory is not going to invent one. The realistic play is picking a unit that was not built in the United States, and two of the brands people assume are Korean now build washers in the American south.

Appliances

Small kitchen appliances

Almost nothing on the counter, and two things you would not have picked. The countertop appliances people replace most often are not on the list at all: microwaves, coffee and tea makers, toasters, kettles, and the whole blender, mixer, food processor and juicer family. Their spare parts are not on it either. What was taken is anything that cooks by heating an oven cavity - bread makers, rice cookers, indoor grills, and countertop ovens generally, which is where an air fryer sits, because customs rulings on both sides of the border treat an air-fryer oven as an oven. Those are 25%. The second catch is a residual line, "Other appliances: Other", the basket the tariff schedule uses for motor-driven household appliances that fit nowhere else. Kitchen waste disposers sit in it. So does the ultrasonic humidifier, which the list names outright. The garburator under the sink is surtaxed; the blender above it is not.

Why it is widely believed otherwise

Ranges and ovens are on the list at 25% and were reported that way, and a bread maker is legally the same kind of thing as a range - both are cookers in tariff item 8516.60. The heading those cookers live in, 8516, also contains the kettle, the toaster and the coffee maker, so "kitchen appliances are tariffed" reads as true of the whole heading. It is true of one subheading out of thirteen. The rest of 8516 was left alone, and so was the microwave, which is not a cooker in tariff terms at all.

What people get wrong

This is the category where the Canadian answer barely exists. Small appliances are light, cheap and made in enormous runs, which is the opposite of the profile that keeps manufacturing close to the market, and the Canadian brands here are brands rather than factories. Salton is the clearest case, and worth reading closely: it is Canadian-owned, it says so prominently, and on the same page it says its manufacturing is carried out abroad. Canadian-owned and Canadian-made are different claims, and only one of them has anything to do with a tariff. The good news is that it matters less here than anywhere else on this site - most of what is in this category was never taken, so there is no surtax to route around.

The one small appliance in an ordinary kitchen that is squarely surtaxed, and it is under the sink rather than on the counter. The inversion. The most conspicuously American appliance on a Canadian counter is built in Ohio and is not on the tariff list, because stand mixers are motor-driven food mixers in tariff item 8509.40 and that line was not taken. KitchenAid says on its own site that Greenville is "the proud home of the KitchenAid Stand Mixer since 1941", which ties the product to the town but stops short of stating current production, and the factory tour it describes is closed. Trade reporting says every KitchenAid stand mixer in the world is built there. That is enough for reported and not enough for verified, and it does not change the answer either way: buying one costs no more after September 8.

Air conditioners and heat pumps

US-built air conditioning and heat pump equipment carries the lowest of the three bands, 15%. One line breaks the pattern: machines that do not incorporate a refrigerating unit, tariff item 8415.83, sit at 25% instead.
